Regular antenatal check-ups help track the health of mother and baby through pregnancy. Each trimester has different priorities.
First trimester
The first visit typically confirms the pregnancy, estimates the due date, and includes baseline blood tests. This is also a good time to discuss diet, supplements such as folic acid, and any existing health conditions.
Second trimester
Visits usually continue at regular intervals, with growth monitoring, screening tests and a detailed anomaly scan typically scheduled during this period. Weight gain, blood pressure and blood sugar are reviewed at each visit.
Third trimester
Check-ups become more frequent as the due date approaches, focusing on the baby's growth and position, and preparation for delivery. Any new symptoms should be reported promptly rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.
What each visit generally covers
- Blood pressure and weight check
- Review of any new symptoms
- Relevant blood tests or scans for that stage
- Nutrition and lifestyle guidance
